The Man Behind
the Music
Marcus Perry was born in 1989 — technically a 90s kid. But music has a way of choosing you regardless of the decade you arrived in.
A graduate of Belmont University's commercial music program, Marcus trained in classical, jazz, gospel, R&B, pop, and beyond. It was during his senior recital that an unexpected discovery changed the direction of everything. A 1985 Prince track called Pop Life stopped him mid-search. The simplicity, the groove, the space — it pulled him in immediately. He arranged it with horns and live band, and performed it for his recital. Something clicked that never unclicked.
From there the love kept growing. A gig introduced him to Christopher Cross' Sailing, and that song became so significant he and his wife danced to it at their wedding. Then came his master's thesis at Belmont — a comparative study of Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna alongside the artists of today, exploring how the sonic language of the 80s never truly left. He studied the Yamaha DX7, the Linn Drum, the Roland D-50, the birth of MIDI. And he wrote five original songs to prove the thesis with music, not just words.
Vibe80 is the result of deep love for music, intentional craft, and a lasting connection to the nostalgia, soul, and creativity of the 80s. It is built on the belief that the spirit of that era still has something meaningful to say — both to those who lived it and to those discovering it for the first time.
